A roof without a right angle
A new timber roof structure over an existing steel frame, Gorna Banya, Sofia
About the project
Every roof has its structure. But there are projects where you know from the very start that standard solutions will not be enough. Here the challenge was the geometry itself - the entire roof was designed without a single right angle.
The challenge
The whole roof was designed without right angles. With geometry like this every line matters - every pitch, every joint and every detail has to be executed precisely so that the structure works as a single whole.
The solution
We worked to the client's existing design, building an entirely new timber structure over the steel frame already in place. We specified pressure-treated timber, a double batten grid and Tondach tiles. For the rainwater system we chose American seamless gutters in matte grey, and clad the fascia boards in the same sheet metal to finish the roof down to the last detail.
The result
The complex geometry became part of the roof’s character, and the separate structural elements became one coherent, precisely executed system. Much of what makes a roof good stays invisible once it is finished: behind the tiles sit the structure, the exact joints, the correct pitches and the attention to every detail.

Stages of work
How the house was brought back - step by step.
- 01
A completely new timber structure was built over the existing steel frame, to the client's design. Every pitch and every joint was executed precisely so the roof works as a single whole.
- New timber structure over the steel frame
- Pressure-treated timber
- Double batten grid
- Tondach tile covering
- American seamless gutters, matte grey
- Fascia board cladding
- 02
The complex geometry became part of the roof’s character. For us a good roof is not simply what can be seen from outside - it is everything done correctly before the last tile is laid.
- Precise geometry with no right angles
- One coherent, finished system
- Attention to every detail
